Newcastle United will discover what lies in wait on the first step to another road to Wembley over the coming 24 hours as they prepare for the FA Cup third round draw.

Forty teams across League One, League Two and the non-league system were scheduled to take part in second round ties over the weekend and they know what their reward will be for a win. The Magpies, their Premier League rivals and Championship sides including Middlesbrough and Sunderland will enter the competition for the first time when they take their place in the third round draw.

Who did Newcastle face in last season’s third round?

This won’t bring back happy memories for anyone involved with Newcastle, not even Kieran Trippier, who made his Magpies debut in last season’s third round tie against Cambridge United. Eddie Howe’s men put in a poor display at St James Park as a Joe Ironside goal and a fine goalkeeping display from Dimitar Mitov helped the League One side to a famous win on Tyneside.

Where and when can I watch this season’s first round draw?

There are several places to watch the draw take place. First and foremost, it will be broadcast live on BBC Two from 7pm on Monday night. However, the Football Association have also confirmed the draw will be shown live on their official FA Cup Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts.

What are the ball numbers to look out for?

Obviously the most important one is Newcastle United’s and the Magpies will be ball number 27 in Monday’s draw. Others to look out for are Liverpool (21), Manchester City (23) and Manchester United (24).

There hasn’t been a Tyne-Tees or Tyne-Wear derby for a number of years - but it’s ball number 25 for Middlesbrough and ball number 37 for Sunderland. There is further North East representation in the draw after Hartlepool United saw off Harrogate Town on Saturday. Pools will be ball number 54 in the draw.

When will the ties take place?
