Newcastle United supporters fumed after former Sunderland striker Darren Bent backed Arsenal to pay between £80million and £100million for Alexander Isak.

Transfer speculation has ramped up in recent weeks regarding the Magpies’ talisman. When asked about the rumours a fortnight ago, Isak shut them down - committing his future to St James’ Park.

Another rampant performance against Tottenham Hotspur has triggered further suggestions that the Swede could be on the move. Premier League title challenges Arsenal have lacked a ruthless No.9 all season, relying on Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and Kai Havertz to lead the line.

The Gunners have been linked with Isak more than other clubs, an irony as he is likened to club legend Thierry Henry. Ex-Sunderland star Bent - who supports Arsenal - echoed those comparisons while urging Mikel Arteta to sign the 24-year-old.

“Again, I am not saying that they are the same, but the way he finishes, that side foot, is like Thierry, just caressing it into the far corner,” he told talkSPORT. “But yeah, if there was one centre-forward out there you said who should Arsenal buy, it’s him.

“(He is worth around) £80-100 million and I would happily pay it. He can do everything. He can take the ball in tight spaces, he can create, he can even come off the left.”

One bemused Toon fan blasted the price tag as “absolute fantasy” following the suggestion. He wrote on social media: “Darren Bent on talkSPORT mentioning Isak and how he’d be a great signing for Arsenal then went on to say £80–100million. Absolute fantasy land.”

Another supporter noted how selling Isak for that figure would make zero sense given Newcastle paid £63million to sign him less than two years ago. As he signed a six-year contract, his book value as far as FFP/PSR amortisation is concerned will still be around £40million this summer.

“I’ve seen so many Arsenal fans saying this,” the response read. “We signed Isak for £65million two years ago and he still has four years left on his deal.

“Why on earth would we sell him, when we don’t need to sell key players, for £10-15million profit? I honestly don’t know where they get their confidence from.”
