Newcastle United can splash the cash this summer and are prepared to battle Real Madrid for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, according to reports.

Despite boasting the world’s richest owners, the Magpies have been hamstrung by FFP/PSR restrictions in recent transfer windows. An injury-ravaged campaign meant the need for reinforcements in January but a stringent balance sheet forced Newcastle to keep their powder dry.

The three-year financial period that governs FFP/PSR resets in July, with a lucrative Adidas kit deal and Champions League revenue coming into play. FootballFanCast now claim that Newcastle can spend big and are targeting Toffees talisman Branthwaite.

The 21-year-old has been a rare highlight in an otherwise disappointing campaign at Goodison Park. Sean Dyche has thrown Branthwaite into the first team and that faith has paid dividends - with speculation ramping up about a potential £75million move.

Manchester United and Real Madrid - arguably the two biggest clubs in world football - are reportedly chasing the centre-back. Branthwaite earned his first England call-up during the recent international break but watched from the sidelines as the Three Lions struggled against Brazil and Belgium.

From Newcastle’s perspective, Branthwaite, as a left-footed centre-back, would slot straight into the team as a replacement for long-term absentee Sven Botman. Anthony Gordon could prove to be the Magpies’ secret weapon in any Branthwaite deal, with the Toon winger opening up about their close relationship on England duty.

Both players came through the ranks at Everton, who remain in financial trouble with the Premier League. Newcastle being among the contenders to sign Branthwaite hints at a summer splurge as Toon chiefs aim to reignite the project after an underwhelming campaign.
