Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is suspended for the visit of Newcastle United on Sunday - while Anthony Martial is also an injury doubt.

McTominay picked up his fifth yellow card of the season after coming on as an 83rd-minute substitute during his side’s 2-1 win at Everton.

The Scotland international had only just replaced Christian Eriksen when referee David Coote booked him for a challenge on Demerai Gray.

McTominay’s ban is unlikely to impact the Red Devils too deeply, with £70million summer signing Casemiro in line to start.

Martial’s injury, however, is a little more concerning for Erik ten Hag after the Frenchman was forced to depart just 29 minutes in at Goodison Park.

It was the 26-year-old’s first Premier League start in over a year but he broke down with a third injury in as many months.

“I have to see,” ten Haag said. “I cannot tell what it is, how serious it is, let’s wait the first 24 hours [to see] how serious it is and then I can give an answer.

“Everyone has to take responsibility and Martial also took his responsibility by giving the assist on the first goal.”

That could see Cristiano Ronaldo handed only his second start of the Premier League campaign after scoring his 700th career goal at the weekend.

Ronaldo, 37, scored two goals during Newcastle’s last visit to Old Trafford, which ended in a 4-1 defeat under Steve Bruce.

Also set to miss the game are Harry Maguire (thigh), Donny van de Beek (muscle), Brandon Williams and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
