Five players that could sign for Newcastle United and five that probably will not
Speculation over United’s next signing continues to flow as the hard work continues behind the scenes at St James Park.
Newcastle United supporters are experiencing a very different transfer window to the one they endured 12 months ago.
With Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley in key roles at St James Park, expectations and ambitions were limited and little was expected as the new Premier League season approached.
Joe Willock became the Magpies only summer signing as his impressive performances during a loan spell persuaded United to part with £25million to bring the Arsenal midfielder to Tyneside on a permanent basis.
Fast forward a year and the outlook to far brighter.
Under the ownership of a PIF-led consortium and with Eddie Howe in charge of first-team affairs, the Magpies have already just under £60million adding Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett, Lille centre-back Sven Botman and England goalkeeper Nick Pope to their squad.
More signings are expected to follow as the United recruitment team look to strengthen Howe’s options at the top end of the pitch.
Links with all manner of weird and wonderful names are published on a regular basis - but who could realistically make the move to St James Park and who is unlikely to join the Magpies before the new Premier League season?

5. COULD SIGN: Moussa Diaby (Bayer Leverkusen)
Probably the Magpies main transfer target, there is still some hope that a deal can be reached despite Leverkusen’s high demands. United are looking at other options but could still return for the France international. Photo: Getty Images

6. PROBABLY WON’T: Alexander Isak (Real Sociedad)
Enquiries and talks have taken place but the demands of Real Sociedad and Isak himself mean he is unlikely to start the season on Tyneside. Photo: JONATHAN NACKSTRAND

7. PROBABLY WON’T: Lucas Paqueta (Lyon)
How we would all love to see Bruno Guimaraes line up alongside his best friend! But Lyon seem insistent on a fee far in excess of what Newcastle are willing to pay, meaning this deal is highly unlikely to happen. Photo: Getty Images

8. PROBABLY WON’T: Isco (Real Madrid)
This rumour has been repeated throughout the summer but Isco does not really fit the profile of player United are targeting. Photo: Getty Images
