Newcastle United’s recent form has alleviated talk of needing to strengthen the squad this month. There is, however, still a want, at least from supporters anyway.
Will Newcastle make any new signings? And what about outgoings? NewcastleWorld takes a detailed look below.

Despite Jacob Murphy’s excellent form of late, the right-hand side of attack remains an obvious position to strengthen having been overlooked amid £450million of PIF transfer spending.
In the eyes of many supporters, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo would be the dream signing and while Newcastle hold an interest in the Cameroonian, there is little chance of them meeting his £60million asking price.
Johan Bakayoko of PSV Eindhoven is another winger United admire and although he would cost less than Mbeumo, he too is likely to arrive.
Eddie Howe’s side, of course, attempted to sign Marc Guehi in the summer. He was their number one target but a deal stalled when Crystal Palace demanded north of £70m.

Hide AdGuehi is out-of-contract in 18 months’ time and Palace would have to significantly lower his asking price in order to tempt the Magpies back to the table. The summer will be interesting, although interest in the 24-year-old may be greater then.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell wants to alter the club’s recruitment strategy by unearthing players rather than just targeting ready-made stars. An example of that would be Lens’ 20-year-old centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, whose value is around £20million.
Meanwhile, Newcastle retain a strong interest in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford after seeing a £16m bid rejected in the summer. That said, any potential move would be dependent on another goalkeeper leaving. Howe’s squad currently has five senior ‘keepers.
Will Newcastle United make any January signings?

The prospect of securing a major signing this month has been played down by multiple sources at Newcastle, including the head coach himself.

Hide AdSpeaking in December, Eddie Howe explained: “I think there is a desire from everyone at the club to deliver that. But then you have to go to the realities of what is possible. You have to make decisions for the here and now, but also for the future. We have to make sure we don’t put ourselves in a position where the summer becomes very, very difficult to do what we need to do, or future windows beyond.
“I think freshness is important in a squad, I won’t sit here and deny that. There needs to be a certain element of trading in and out to keep the group dynamic new. A new dynamic and a new team always have to form every season.
“Sometimes, the same squad can produce a staleness and a negative product. So I think we’re aware of that. But it’s about what we’re able to do rather than, “I want”. “I want” is clear. It’s what we’re able to do that is the key thing.”
If Newcastle are to be active in the coming weeks then player sales will be key.

Who could leave Newcastle United in January?

Some of Newcastle’s longest-serving players are most at risk of departing St James’ Park before the winter window closes on Monday, February 3.
Miguel Almiron has fallen down the pecking order, making just one Premier League start this term. The Paraguayan has been linked with several clubs in recent days, including Charlotte FC - who tried to sign him in the summer - Olympiakos, and a handful of Brazilian teams.
Sources in the Middle East claim Martin Dubravka has agreed personal terms with Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab but Howe is reluctant to sanction a move when Nick Pope is injured.

Hide AdShould Pope return this month then there could be movement on Dubravka.
Sean Longstaff’s case is also an interesting one. Newcastle have triggered a clause to extend his contract until June 2026 but there is doubt over his long-term future.
In a PSR world, selling an academy graduate represents “pure profit”. Longstaff is a valued member of Newcastle’s squad and loved by Howe but in recent weeks has lost his place in the starting XI.
Meanwhile, Kieran Trippier - who turned 34 in September - could be one that leaves if an offer arrives. Although the former England man has started the last two games, Tino Livramento appears to be first choice right-back.
