Newcastle United have been linked with potentially selling Miguel Almiron to free up funds elsewhere

Miguel Almiron has claimed he “feels blessed” to play for Newcastle United amid reported transfer speculation.

The Paraguayan is currently on international duty and lost his opening game of the Copa America 2-1 against Columbia. Almiron was hooked on the hour mark and the situation does not get any easier with Brazil - and Bruno Guimaraes - up next this weekend.

Reports have suggested Newcastle could offload the 30-year-old to alleviate FFP/PSR woes. Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab were rumoured to be interested in January - an advance Almiron rejected.

The forward is thought to be happy at the Magpies and would like to see out the final two years on his contract. That stance could frustrate some fans, with many believing now is time to cash in on the former record signing.

Speaking to reporters on international duty, Almiron hailed Toon supporters while declaring his love for Newcastle. He said: “When we play here (at St James’ Park), it feels like playing in your own backyard. The city is like that too. They are very friendly people.

“I saw that from the beginning. When I arrived we had tough times but still people came and asked for autographs and supported you. I had never experienced that until I came here (Newcastle). Now we have the Copa America, which for me is going to be very important.

“Not only for me but for my teammates as well and I think we are going to do well. As I always say, I am very grateful to the fans for the affection they showed me from the beginning. I feel blessed.”
