The Magpies confirmed two new deals had been agreed as they returned to pre-season training on Sunday.

Newcastle United have confirmed long-serving defender Paul Dummett and goalkeeper Loris Karius have penned new one-year deals.

The duo were not named on the Magpies retained list last month but it was revealed both players had been offered new contracts. Those offers have now been accepted and Dummett and Karius will now form part of Eddie Howe’s squad for the upcoming season.

The United manager hinted he would like Dummett to extend his decade-long stay in the Magpies first-team squad when he was asked about his future towards the end of last season.

He said: “I see Paul as part of our future. When you build a squad you are never going to be able to play everybody for the amount of time they want to. So you need players who are prepared to fight for their place, train well and have an effect on the group. Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, they are players who have not performed for the outside world, but internally they have been excellent for us.”

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Karius joined United last September on a short-term deal that was extended until the end of the season as he provided backup and competition for regular number one Nick Pope.

He received the backing of manager Howe in March, as he said: “He’s (Karius) an important part of what we’re doing. I’ve said that all along, He’s an important member of our goalkeeping team. Its great to have Nick back and Martin back, two top goalkeepers, but Loz is certainly valued by us.”

After making one appearance, which famously came in the Carabao Cup Final defeat against Manchester United, Karius was expected to leave Tyneside this summer and was linked with a move to a number of Serie A clubs. However, he will now remain at St James Park until the end of the upcoming season and will hope to add to his solitary appearance as the Magpies face an increased number of fixtures following their qualification for the Champions League.
