Former Man Utd winger eyed by Newcastle United gives 25-word answer on his future - already spoken to Alexander Isak

Newcastle United retain an interest in the former Manchester United winger.

Newcastle United-linked winger Anthony Elanga gave a short response when asked about his future at Nottingham Forest.

The Magpies discussed the possibility of signing Elanga as part of the agreement that saw academy graduate Elliot Anderson move to the City Ground for £35million. In return, United signed Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos - not Elanga - for £20m as both clubs satisfied Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

While Vlachodimos has had to settle with being third-choice goalkeeper on Tyneside, Elanga has formed a key part of the Forest side that currently sits third in the Premier League table. The 22-year-old has featured in all 29 league matches, scoring five goals and setting up eight.

Eddie Howe’s side will push to sign a right forward this summer and Elanga is still among the players under consideration. However, when asked about his future last week, the 22-year-old refused to give anything away.

Anthony Elanga answers question on his future

The former Manchester United man told Fotbollskanalen: "If I have a good season there will always be teams that want to talk, but right now I'm in Nottingham and I'm happy there.”

"Nottingham is going pretty well,” he added. “We're doing pretty well. Hopefully we'll finish as high as possible. We can do even better. I know all the players in the squad and I know we can all be even better, but we've done fantastically well so far.

"We have nine important games left. Many people are talking about Europe (Champions League place) and that is a possibility but we have to win our games. We have done well so far but the season is long. We have to keep winning. I always want more.

"People often ask: ‘What's the best match you've played?’ or: ‘What's the best goal you've scored?’ Then I always answer that it's the next one. I can always improve. It would be huge [to qualify], but anything can happen in the Premier League.

“It's the best league in the world and if you can perform there then you can perform anywhere."

Anthony Elanga has spoken to Alexander Isak

Elanga revealed in September last year that he had spoken to Alexander Isak about Newcastle’s past interest. The pair are currently on international duty together with Sweden, who host Northern Ireland in a friendly on Tuesday night.

“Isak talked to me about it.” Elanga said previously. “But I said the same to him as I say to you. We have a good relationship and good chemistry when we play together.

“But I have a contract with Nottingham. I’m focusing on Nottingham and hope to have a good season, then we’ll see what happens.”
