Anthony Gordon has received a number of congratulations messages after signing a new contract at Newcastle United.

Just under two years after joining from Everton for £45million, Gordon has established himself as a key part of Eddie Howe’s squad - last season scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists on his way to being crowned the club’s Player of the Year.

The 23-year-old was called up to the England squad for Euro 2024 and while he was often overlooked by Gareth Southgate, the interim appointment of Lee Carsley has saw Gordon become a regular starter.

His new long-term deal at St James’ Park is a reward for his progress.

“So proud to have signed a new long term deal,” Gordon wrote on Instagram. “I’ve loved every minute of playing for this club, since the moment I signed. Some amazing memories so far and still so much more to achieve. 🖤🤍”

And several people within football have responded with their best wishes. Newcastle teammates Nick Pope and Jacob Murphy are among those in the comment section, as is former co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussui, who played a key part in negotiations that led to Gordon’s transfer in January 2023.

There are replies from players at other clubs too, including Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Jacob Ramsey, and Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, who was a target for Newcastle in the summer.

The former Manchester United winger was first linked with the Magpies in June during their frantic push to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). However, Newcastle ended up signing Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos as part of the agreement that saw academy graduate Elliot Anderson head to the City Ground.

Then, on deadline day, Eddie Howe’s side made a late enquiry for Elanga but a negotiations did not advance as the Reds demand a player plus cash deal.

Addressing Newcastle’s interest, Elanga told Fotboll Skanalen: “The environment in Nottingham is good. It is clear that you can see that Newcastle are interested, it means that I am playing good football when a big club shows interest.

“But Nottingham is also a big club, they have won two Champions Leagues, even though it was before I was born. But I’m happy in Nottingham and have a contract there.”
