Former Newcastle United defender Habib Beye might be about to become a part of a managerial merry-go-round that could see Will Still appointed as Sunderland boss.

The Black Cats have made no secret of their desire to land the managerial prospect. Famed for his Football Manager background, the 31-year-old continues to be linked with the vacant Black Cats hot seat.

The video game is cited by Still as the tool he used to craft his tactical prowess before moving into management. A successful spell at Reims has resulted in calls for him to cut his teeth on British soil.

Sunderland have been without a permanent manager since sacking Michael Beale after just 12 games. Mike Dodds has steadied the ship on an interim basis and an appointment is expected at the end of the campaign.

Still remains a leading candidate with bookmakers, with ex-Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom also in contention. French outlet Le10Sport has claimed Reims are targeting Beye should their manager head to the Stadium of Light.

The former Toon favourite was named fans’ player of the season for 2007-08, with Mike Ashley claiming he “loved” Beye in an off-the-cuff interview. A downturn in form the following year, with the club marred in chaos, saw Newcastle relegated.

Beye initially outlined his desire to stay at St James’ Park and achieve promotion but behind-the-scenes drama made the right-back pursue a move. He is currently the manager of Paris-based club Red Star, who sit top of the French third division.
