Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes Newcastle United were denied a penalty in the 1-1 draw at Wolves.

The incident Gallagher is referring to was spotted immediately by Magpies fans when Sean Longstaff had his shirt pulled by Matheus Nunes.

VAR, however, chose not to review the incident as Bruno Lage’s side went to take a 1-0 lead through Ruben Neves.

Gallagher told Sky Sports’ Ref Watch: “All I can think is that they believe he hasn’t impacted on the forward but for me, it’s a penalty.

“You watch how long he got his shirt for... it has to be a penalty.”

Wolves thought they had doubled their advantage later in the second half when Raul Jimenez finished off a quick counter-attack.

However, the goal was swiftly chalked off after Ryan Fraser was pushed in the back by Pedro Neto in the build-up.

“Perfect use of VAR,” Gallagher concluded. “VAR alerted the referee (Peter Bankes) and said you need to go to the screen and look at this.

“It’s a foul. They’ve got the decision absolutely right.”

Another incident was Fabian Schar’s late challenge on Neto, a tackle midfielder Neves labelled as a leg breaker.

Schar was shown a yellow card and Gallagher agrees that was the correct decision.

He said: “I’ve read so much about this. I don’t think it’s the ‘leg-breaking’ tackle I’ve read about. It’s not a nice tackle but I don’t think it was a red card.”

Allan Saint-Maximin’s stunning 90th-minute volley earned Eddie Howe’s side a deserved point at Molineux to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign.
