Newcastle United will assess their injury situation ahead of next weekend’s Premier League clash at Southampton. Eddie Howe revealed Fabian Schar had felt some discomfort in his hamstring during the 4-0 win over Aston Villa.

The Switzerland international was among the six players to be substituted after being replaced by Jamaal Lascelles in the closing stages. A brace from Callum Wilson and goals from Joelinton and Miguel Almiron maintained the club’s position in the Champions League spots.

“We’re still carrying a few players who have got different bits and piece,” Howe revealed. “Fabian was just feeling his hamstring, I hope he’s OK. There’s a number of players today just feeling the effects of the busy period, so hopefully, we’ve got nothing too serious.”

Sven Botman withdrew in the 71st minute and appeared to walk off the pitch gingerly. Howe, however, said: “I don’t think he was in any discomfort. He’s 100% fit and fine but just want to make sure he stays that way.”

Allan Saint-Maximin played the remaining four minutes after missing seven of United’s previous eight games with a hamstring injury. Jonjo Shelvey also got more minute under his belt in his first St James’ Park appearance of the campaign.
