Newcastle United kicked off their Austria schedule with a comfortable 3-0 win over German third-tier side 1860 Munich at the Saalfelden Arena.

And while you’ll likely have already seen the goals and the highlights either on NUFC TV or social media, here’s some bits and bobs you will probably have missed.

Eddie Howe’s Matt Ritchie connection

Matt Ritchie played no part in the action yesterday, but he was by no means an uninterested party.

In fact, Ritchie flanked head coach Eddie Howe for much of the half hour while the players were out warming up. They could be seen chatting, sat side-by-side, in the bar overlooking the main pitch.

Does this shine a light on the relationship between the two - and open up the possibility of a longer stay for the former Bournemouth man? Only time will tell, but Howe remains a big fan of the player and his influence.

Some goalkeeper warm up quirks

Newcastle have four goalkeepers on this trip, but used only two in this encounter. And it appears as if they allowed Mark Gillespie and Karl Darlow to remain at the club hotel, as it was newly-appointed goalkeeper coach Adam Bartlett who was in nets for the warm up shooting drills while Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka did their own routine elsewhere.

The groundsman DJ and Coming Home Newcastle

Newcastle’s groundsman have been camped in Austria, tending to the pitches at Saalfelden for a week or so in preparation for the United visit - and they had a big influence on the pre-match audio, as well as the playing surface.

One of the groundsman could be seen darting regularly to the DJ box and advising on announcements and the playlist, which after one visit saw Coming Home Newcastle given an airing.

Some rather interesting player pronunciations

I’m not one to make fun of anyone trying to correctly call the name of a player, we all make mistakes. However, the ones thrown out by the pre-match announcer had many a Geordie chuckling.

The best, but not limited to these, for me was Yonyo Shelv-aye, Yacob Murphy and Jamaal La-shells.

Callum Wilson’s hilarious referee rant

It’s fair to say referee Reuf Salihovic had a bit of a shocker - and he was told as much by one of Newcastle United’s players.

In a comical moment in the opening 45, the very flaky Salihovic reached for a yellow card for yet another non-foul, this time by skipper Jamaal Lascelles.

And after brandishing it, Wilson could be seen to gesture with his finger to his temple and question whether the man in the middle was losing his head. The striker would likely have got a card of his own back home in the Premier League.

The subtle defensive number change

From 15 to 2. Kieran Trippier really feels part of the Newcastle United first-team now - and the number on his back now reflects that.

Very fitting for United’s stand-in skipper.

Goal music - but this time something quite acceptable

Mark Knopfler’s Local Hero is not what you’d expect to hear after a goal had been scored, but that’s exactly what blasted out following Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes’ strikes.

Now, I’m not one for goal music per se, but I’ll make an exception for this particular tune.

It was a nice touch from the in house DJ, who was in top form playing everything from up tempo EDM, glam rock to Motown.

Sean Longstaff winning more than just on field plaudits

Long after most of United’s players were gone for their post-match shower, goalscorer Longstaff, who put in a lung-busting half hour show in Saalfelden, was still out hammering running drills with the younger members of the Newcastle squad, including brother Matty Longstaff.

He wasn’t the only first teamer there, but he stood out like a sore thumb as he sprinted past his brother, who didn’t play a minute, and kid Jay Turner-Cooke, drafted on to the bench from the U21 trip to Spain.

Some going for a lad who’d just put in a match-winning show.
