‘Get the deal done’ - Winger to agent after Newcastle United express transfer interest

Jacob Murphy was previously outcasted but is now loving life at Newcastle United.

Jacob Murphy has revealed he ordered his agent to get him to Newcastle United once the call came in 2017.

Eight years ago, the Magpies were enjoying the promotion celebrations as Rafa Benitez prepared for Premier League life. Winning the Championship title - as well as an experienced manager - gave Newcastle a solid platform to survive the drop.

Murphy arrived from Norwich City for £12million and initially proved a flop. In truth, the winger endured a rough time at St James’ Park until Eddie Howe’s arrival.

Two loan spells saw Murphy become a bit-part player, with Steve Bruce occasionally deploying him at wing-back. However, the 30-year-old is now undisputed first-choice on the right flank and has forged a fruitful partnership with Alexander Isak.

Newcastle United decision a no-brainer

Reflecting on his Toon switch, Murphy admitted the decision was a no-brainer once his agent got in touch. He told BBC Sport: “You have a crossroads situation where your career will go one of two ways. I vow to always choose the better path.

“My agent let me know Newcastle were interested. I was like ‘Come on, let’s get this done’. Once you know the team you supported has come in for you it makes it an easy decision. To look down and constantly have the Newcastle crest on your shirt is amazing.”

Jacob Murphy has ‘targets’ at Newcastle United

An impressive 22 goal contributions for the Magpies has taken many by surprise. Murphy admitted he keeps his targets to himself as a wide player.

“I do have targets but I never try to force it,” he added. “I always let it come to me if I’m doing the correct things. That’s how the universe works, it’ll always find you. This season has been finding me.

“I have a great striker in Alex (Isak) to provide for and great experience behind me. Everything is clicking to help elevate my game and then I think my game elevates others.”

Dan Burn the perfect England inspiration

Murphy is keeping the faith regarding an England call-up after watching Dan Burn earn his first appearance aged 32 in March. He said: “Dan (Burn) has not only been a really good friend but he’s been a great inspiration for me and a lot of people in the dressing room. To see him getting the accolades and for people to really appreciate him as a player at 32, that is added incentive.

“Dreams of playing international football can still be there. Credit to the new manager (Thomas Tuchel) for putting faith in Dan at such an age.

“Hopefully, people at 30 aren’t being overlooked, 30 is the new 25! It’s something I can see. But I know taking care of my club form is going to give me the best opportunity to represent my country.”
