Harry Redknapp has picked Kieran Trippier and Sean Longstaff in his Premier League team of the week for their showing against Luton Town.

Both players netted in the 4-4 draw on Saturday, with Longstaff netting a brace to put the Magpies ahead twice. While the game was entertaining for the neutral, Newcastle fans were left feeling like they had missed an opportunity following the win at Aston Villa.

Eddie Howe’s side capitulated early in the second half to fall 4-2 down by 62 minutes. But a late fightback resulted in Newcastle sparing their blushes and rescuing a point at St James’ Park.

Trippier bagged the third goal to help United on their way before Harvey Barnes equalised with 17 minutes plus stoppage time remaining. The possibility of a late winner was on but Newcastle’s momentum stalled - allowing Luton to hang on for a point.

A feeling of “what could have been” emanated around Tyneside as a win would have kept the Magpies within touching distance of the top six. However, former Premier League manager Redknapp still named two Newcastle stars in his BetVictor team of the week.

“What an incredible game that was at St James’ Park,” he said. “Kieran Trippier has to get in my side, that was a vintage performance from him. I know he’s had his troubles this season but he showed how good he is going forward.

“When a club like Bayern Munich are interested in you it shows how good a player you are. Make no mistake, this lad is top class.”

“Sean Longstaff goes under the radar for me. This boy never stops running and I think Newcastle really miss him when he’s out the side. He makes loads of runs into the box as well and as you saw against Luton, he knows how to put the ball in the net.”
