Newcastle United’s pursuit of Jesse Lingard is over after Manchester United told the midfielder he is staying at Old Trafford.

Eddie Howe’s side tried again on deadline day to reach a loan agreement over the England international, who was keen on a switch to St James’ Park.

However, the Red Devils ended all hope of a deal being agreed at around 6pm after deciding to keep hold of the player.

Lingard will see out the final six months of his contract at Old Trafford before becoming a free agent, where he won’t be short of options.

Will the Magpies move to sign a Lingard alternative? It feels unlikely - but time will time with four hours left of the January transfer window remaining.

The clock is quickly ticking towards the 11pm deadline, though United could have an extra two hours in which to finalise any late deals.

Premier League ‘Deal Sheet’ explained

As per Premier League rules, Newcastle can be given until 1am to complete the deal - providing that the club have submitted a 'Deal Sheet'.

These sheets provide details of the impending transfer and confirm that an agreement has been reached, before providing clubs with extra time in which to submit all the required documentation.

The details required on this sheet are fairly basic and amount to the clubs and player involved and the fee being paid, if there is one.

Deal sheets cannot be requested until 9pm on transfer deadline day and then must be submitted, fully completed, by 11pm.

Once received and approved by the Premier League, clubs can then be granted permission to submit all the required transfer paperwork by a 1am deadline.

Newcastle have already confirmed the deadline signings of Matt Targett, who join Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes at St James’ Park.

Dan Burn will become the club’s fifth summer signing, subject to official confirmation.
