Newcastle United were boosted by the return of Sven Botman during Saturday afternoon's 3-0 victory over Fulham at St James' Park.

The Dutchman returned to the Magpies' matchday squad for the first time since scoring his first goal for the club in the 8-0 victory at Sheffield United in September.

Botman was named on the bench before being introduced inside the remaining 10 minutes, which brought a loud cheer from the St James' Park crowd as he replaced goalscorer Dan Burn.

“He's a very, very popular member of the dressing room, popular in terms of personality, but also as a player," said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe. "The lads love him on the pitch.

"He's had a really difficult injury, it's not been clear-cut for him. We're really hopeful he can stay fit now, He's back, he's a key part of our plans."

The 23-year-old was initially scheduled to return around late October or early November but his knee swelled when back in light training. United feared he might have to undergo surgery but fortunately has responded well in recent weeks.

The player himself reflected on a "tough period". Taking to Instagram after the game, Botman said: "It has been a tough period but I’m so happy to play football again with this amazing team! See you Tuesday 🤍🖤"

Botman could make his first start since returning from injury on Tuesday when Newcastle take on Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. He turns for a busy period with games against Luton Town, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool to come over the festive period.

As it stands, United could be without 12 senior players for the trip to Stamford Bridge after Joelinton and Fabian Schar were forced off in the first-half over the victory against Fulham.

Alexander Isak also missed the game altogether as he feels the after-effects of his groin issue.
