The 32-year-old was given a one-year contract extension last week off the back of his third first-team appearance while the Magpies were in Australia.
Speaking to the club website, he spoke of his delight at being offered a new deal. Gillespie said: "I'm delighted to be extending my contract into next season. This is the club I grew up supporting and it's a hugely exciting time to be a part of it.

But for now his mind is on other things, namely his upcoming nuptials and well-attended stag.
Along with fellow Geordies Paul Dummett, Andy Carroll and Elliot Anderson, Gillespie was also- perhaps surprisingly- joined by Sandro Tonali partying in Spain.

And that’s not the only footballing star Gillespie bumped into. He also posted a photo with Atletico Madrid’s Koke and Belgium’s Toby Alderweireld.
Gillespie posted a pic of him and Alderwireld with the caption: “Not finished yet.”
It’s difficult to imagine who else could pop up before they land back on Tyneside.
