'His knee' - Anthony Gordon injury revealed ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League run-in

Anthony Gordon hasn’t started a game for Newcastle United in two months.

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is carrying a knee injury, head coach Eddie Howe has revealed.

Gordon hasn’t started a game for Newcastle since he was shown a straight red card during the FA Cup fifth round defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion eight weeks ago. He was given a three-match suspension but ended up missing an additional game after he sustained an injury on international duty in England.

The 24-year-old has been back available for the last four fixtures but has had to settle for a place on the bench due to the form of Harvey Barnes, who has scored four goals and registered four assists in his previous eight Premier League matches.

Newcastle beat Ipswich Town 3-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday to move up to third in the Premier League table and further bolster their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

After the game, Howe was asked about Barnes keeping Gordon out of the team, to which he revealed the latter was nursing a knee problem. However, that didn’t prevent Gordon from coming on as a 67th-minute substitute against Ipswich.

Howe said: “Yeah, I think Harvey's been outstanding since he got his opportunity in the team. I think he grabbed it with both hands and that's all he can do.

“Anthony, I don't think is still 100% match fit. This week in training, he's still aware of some feeling in his knee so we need to protect him and make sure that when we bring him back into the team that he's 100% fit.”

Newcastle have just four games of the season remaining, including away games against Brighton & Hove Albion and home games versus Chelsea and Everton.

Anthony Gordon set Newcastle United challenge

Ahead of last weekend’s 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa, Newcastle assistant coach Jason Tindall also spoke about Gordon’s current situation. Tindall admitted the player may be frustrated but challenged him to be a good teammate.

“Anthony has played the game long enough to understand that the team is playing extremely well,” Tindall said. “Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy, two players in his position, are performing extremely well.

“At times like this as a player, as frustrating as it can be sometimes, you do need to put the shoe on the other foot and go ‘Right, if I was that player performing that way, what would I expect’.

“You would always say that you would expect to be a good teammate, to support that person and continue to work hard every single day so, when your moment comes, when you step on that pitch, you are able to go and deliver the performances that everyone knows you can. (It is) testament to all the players. That’s what they have been doing so far.”
