Newcastle United face a significant challenge as they travel to treble winners Manchester City looking to build on their opening day win against Aston Villa.

Eddie Howe’s men were in fine form at a buoyant St James Park last weekend as an Alexander Isak brace and a goal apiece from Callum Wilson and debutant duo Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes saw United canter to a 5-1 win to get their Premier League campaign off to the perfect start.

City also made a positive start to their season as Erling Haaland scored twice in a 3-0 win at top tier newcomers Burnley and that was followed up by Wednesday night’s UEFA Super Cup win against La Liga club Sevilla as Pep Guardiola’s side came through a penalty shoot-out to add another piece of silverware to their impressive haul.

An intriguing contest lies in wait at the Etihad Stadium as Newcastle look to claim only their first league win at the home of the treble winners. NewcastleWorld takes a look at everything you need to know ahead of the game.

Where and when is the game taking place?

The game will take place at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium on Saturday 19th August. Kick-off is scheduled for 8pm.

What is the latest team news from both clubs?

Eddie Howe will head into the game with the same squad that saw off Aston Villa last weekend. Emil Krafth and Joe Willock will not return until after the international break next month as they continue their comebacks from injuries that curtailed their involvement last season.

The Magpies manager will have some big calls to make as he decides whether to retain faith with the side that got their season off to a winning start or make changes and hand starts to the likes of Sean Longstaff, Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson.

There was a major blow for Manchester City ahead of the game after key midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury in the win at Burnley. Defender Ruben Dias is a doubt as he remains under concussion protocols but England star John Stones has been confirmed as a definite absentee.

What have both managers said ahead of the game?

Eddie Howe:“We want our players to go there with all the positive emotions that our season last year, our first game of this season, should bring. We're looking at this game as an opportunity for us to be at our best. Yes, we have to concentrate on Manchester City's strengths and we have to try and stop those, but we also have to be ourselves and we can't change. We want to become a top team consistently in the Premier League. To do that, we have to have a clear identity ourselves and try and implement that on other teams.”

Pep Guardiola (speaking after the UEFA Super Cup win against Sevilla): “Of course tomorrow we'll be even happier than today. Recovered, not one drop of alcohol today.  (We will) Recover as much as possible because again from Greece, thank you so much to the Premier League to let us play on Saturday not on Sunday or Monday. Thank you so much.”
