Marc Guehi has revealed his honour at becoming Crystal Palace’s club captain as a potential move to Newcastle United rumbles on in the background.

The Magpies have submitted multiple bids for the Euro 2024 star, the most recent understood to be worth £65million including add-ons. However, a fee is yet to be agreed, with Palace chairman Steve Parish previously stating Guehi is a “superstar” and will cost superstar money.

It had been suggested in the last 48 hours that the two clubs were edging closer to an agreement but noises out of Selhurst Park on Friday suggest that isn’t the case.

Eagles boss Oliver Glasner confirmed Guehi would lead his side out for their first home game of the new Premier League season against West Ham United on Saturday (kick-off 3pm). The 24-year-old has also taken over from Joel Ward as club captain and now has a dedicated column in the South London outfit’s matchday programme.

And in his pre-West Ham programmes notes - posted by Crystal Palace reporter Bobby Manzi on X - Guehi has spoken about his honour about being skipper and looking ahead to the campaign.

Although talks between the two clubs are ongoing, his words will do little to convince Newcastle fans he’ll be playing in black and white come next Friday’s transfer deadline.

Guehi wrote: “It’s a huge honour to be made captain of this football club. Ever since I arrived you have been so supportive throughout both good periods and bad, and we always want to repay that support by making Palace successful. “I made my Premier League debut here, earned my first England cap and experienced so many special moments, so thank you for that support. Now we look ahead to this season in the hope that we can create something like the momentum we had at the end of the last campaign.”

While Guehi is understood to be keen on a move to St James’ Park, it is clear the defender isn’t willing to force an exit.
