Ashworth, 50, has previously worked as a sporting director at West Bromwich Albion and the England FA’s director of elite development and technical director.

The Brighton chief is one of many options the Magpies are considering.

What Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said

Howe said: “I highly respect Dan and his work but I won’t go into any more than that. I don’t think it’s right, he works for another football club.

“Yes, I highly like him and respect him but won’t comment anymore.”

What Brighton boss Graham Potter said

“As I have experienced myself sometimes, things appear in papers which aren’t the truth, it’s just speculation,” said Brighton boss Graham Potter.

“It doesn’t surprise me with Dan because he is a fantastic person. And from my experiences with him, he is a top operator, so we are lucky to have him here.

“And long may that continue. But I can’t speculate on speculation.”
