Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has been recognised as one of the best footballers in the world - based on current form.

In a list of 20 players complied by football website 90 Min, the Brazilian is ranked 18th with fellow Premier League stars Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, Rodri, James Maddison, Declan Rice, William Saliba, Son Heung-min and Alisson Becker also named.

“After a rather shaky start to their 2023/24 campaign, Newcastle United have really began to fire on all cylinders recently and that is largely thanks to the superb performances of Bruno Guimaraes,” the website wrote. “He’s been so good in fact, that the Magpies recently gave him a new bumper five-year deal.”

Indeed, the 25-year-old’s return to form has coincided with a seven-game unbeaten run for Eddie Howe’s side. Guimaraes scored during United’s record breaking 8-0 win at Sheffield United while also starring in standout victories over Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Last week it was announced Guimaraes, who joined from Lyon in January 2022 for £35million, had signed a new five-year contract at Newcastle - keeping him at St James’ Park until 2028.

“I’m delighted to get Bruno signed and committed to the long-term future of the football club,” said Howe. “He’s such an important player and he’s done so well since he joined the club. He’s been a huge success since he’s been here so I just hope that he can continue in that vein and carry on his success with us.

“I think he epitomises the recent success we’ve had. He’s put in so many good displays, he’s very consistent and he’s got a great personality off the pitch as well.

“He cares very deeply about Newcastle United and the success of the club and he’s got a great relationship with our supporters. He’s been a key signing for us - definitely the type of signing that we want to make.”
