Lewis Hall has been blown away by Newcastle United supporters since last summer’s switch from Chelsea.

A boyhood fan, the 19-year-old fulfilled a family dream by signing for the Magpies. His father, Colin, and uncle hail from the North East, giving Hall a sample of Geordie culture.

But that did not prepare the defender for relentless autographs and selfies as a Newcastle player. As a one-club city, there are no hiding places up here for Premier League stars wanting a quiet life.

St James’ Park dominates the skyline and other plans go out the window when Newcastle are playing. Even those at Chelsea, Hall’s former club, are not exposed to the full-throttle fan fare, protected by the London hustle and bustle.

Speaking to NUFC TV, the Toon loanee - expected to become a permanent signing this summer - admitted to being overwhelmed by Newcastle’s support. He said: “When I was younger, I was a Newcastle fan like my family. But I never realised how big a following Newcastle have until I arrived here.

“The support is incredible. The whole city revolves around Newcastle. You leave the training ground and there are people waiting for photos and signatures.

“When you drive in on a morning, there’s people waiting there. In the rain, hammering it down, they’re still there. You do your weekly food shop and there are Newcastle fans trying to talk to you.

“It’s really good. It brings a family feeling. You know the support there is behind you. My family were incredibly proud when I joined, especially my dad. He was absolutely buzzing. It was a tough start for me personally but everyone has supported me along the way.”
