Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has been taken out of the firing line by Switzerland due to injury.

The Swiss FA confirmed last night that Schar would not play any part in his side’s trip to Wembley to face England in a friendly on Saturday, nor would he be available for selection for the match with Kosovo in Zurich next Tuesday.

It is thought the decision, citing a groin issue, is precautionary, rather than due to anything suffered while away with his country.

Schar has been suffering with injury in recent weeks, with the player understood to have been given pain-killing injections to remain a key cog in Eddie Howe’s defensive wheel.

Schar is not thought to be a doubt for United’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday week.

The game, however, will come around too soon for the likes of Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier, despite both making huge strides forward during the club’s warm weather training camp in Dubai.
