Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff got their wish by scoring in Newcastle United’s 4-1 victory at Fulham last Saturday.

It took the Magpies No.9 just 11 minutes to score on his return to the starting XI with the easiest of finishes from Joe Willock’s header across goal.

Miguel Almiron scored either side of Longstaff’s strike, where the midfielder reacted quickest from Sven Botman’s saved header to slot home the rebound.

Wilson, speaking on the BBC Footballer’s Football Podcast, recalled a conversation he had with Longstaff prior to kick-off that came true at Craven Cottage.

The 30-year-old said: “We’ve been drawing recently so we needed to get back to winning ways. I finally got back into the line-up and it was nice to contribute with a goal.

“I was talking about it with Sean Longstaff on Friday saying ‘do you know what, I’ve not had a goal that just falls to you nicely in a long time’.

“We were both talking about it before the game and then it happened. It’s crazy how things like that work out so it was nice.”

Although United hit four past their hosts, who were reduced to 10 men on seven minutes following Nathaniel Chalobah’s dismissal, Wilson was disappointed not to score a hat-trick.

The former Bournemouth man missed from six yards out inside the opening five minutes before side-footing another decent opportunity over the crossbar.

“I was disappointed I didn’t score a hat-trick just because of the opportunities I had,” Wilson said.

“I probably had two good chances and by my standards I needed to put those in. I was annoyed at not getting three on the day but it was one of those things.

“It was a tricky game. I think Fulham are a good side. Ultimately, the sending off killed the game for them.

“It’s football at the end of the day. You have to be ruthless and go for the throat when you’ve got an advantage away from home to get three points.

“Scoring quickly after the sending off helped us and we got our rhythm.”
