Leicester City midfielder James Maddison is open to a move to Newcastle United, despite reports of him favouring a switch to London.

For the second summer running, the 26-year-old has been identified as one of the Magpies’ top targets as Eddie Howe looks to add quality and much-needed depth to his midfield.

United attempted to sign Maddison last year but saw two bids rejected. Another approach was considered in January but the Foxes made it abundantly clear he wasn’t for sale.

Six months on and after being relegated from the Premier League, Leicester are now prepared to part ways with Maddison but are determined to make sure a sale is on their terms.

It’s understood an initial asking price of £60million has been set, although the Foxes will likely come down towards the £50m mark, depending on the level of interest. Tottenham Hotspur are also weighing up a move.

While there is no guarantee the England international will move to St James’ Park - Newcastle, for their part, value Maddison, who is into the final year of his contract, closer to £40m - the player himself has made enquiries about life on Tyneside.

Indeed, NewcastleWorld understands Maddison has sought advice on the best places to live in the region, as well as asking general questions about the city and the football club itself.

With suggestions throughout the 2022-23 season that Arsenal were ready to join Tottenham in the race, Maddison has thought about living in North London.

However, with the Gunners locked in talks for West Ham’s Declan Rice and Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, and Spurs unable to offer Champions League football, Newcastle would be confident of reaching an agreement with Maddison, if a fee can be agreed with Leicester.

Maddison flew out to Ibiza on Tuesday following England’s 7-0 win over North Macedonia in their Euro 2024 qualifier. As jokingly hinted by Gareth Southgate, both Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson have tried to “tap up” the former Norwich City man.

Wilson teased Newcastle’s interest on social media when he posted a photo of him grabbing Maddison with the caption: “Newcastle is this way @MADDERS.” Maddison is also represented by the same agency - CAA Base - as Trippier.
