Jamie Reuben has warned there is still work to do against Arsenal before Newcastle United can celebrate reaching the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle have one foot in the Wembley final after goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon sealed a 2-0 win in the first leg at the Emirates. Mikel Arteta’s side - who have won just one of their last four visits to St James’ Park - must win by at least two clear goals to force extra-time.

It is advantage Newcastle but Reuben, like head coach Eddie Howe, is edging on the side of caution.

“Brilliant team performance, still some work to do, once again thank you for the amazing support @NUFC and safe travels home,” Newcastle’s co-owner posted on X.

Reuben’s view has been shared by several members of Newcastle’s staff and players.

“Yeah it was a really good win for us, we’re really pleased but also very aware that there is a big break between the second leg so it is still very much game on and we’ve done half the work,” said Howe.

“ I've got no problem with our supporters thinking whatever they need to think or whatever they want to think but when you're in my shoes I think you've got to be strategic and plan well. You've got to look at what's ahead of you in the next few days and that's what we've always done and that's what we'll always do.

“This [second leg] is in the future and we'll look forward to it when it comes around but it now goes out of my focus totally until it comes back in.”

The second leg takes place at St James’ Park on Wednesday, February 5. Before then, United face Bromley, Wolves, AFC Bournemouth, Southampton and Fulham.
