The Magpies have been linked with a move for the England midfielder throughout January and are understood to have made two unsuccessful loan bids for the 29-year-old.

The Red Devils are said to be demanding a substantial survival bonus based on Newcastle preserving their Premier League status, as well as asking the Magpies to cover Lingard’s wages during the duration of the loan.

The Magpies are now hoping to make a third move for the 32-times capped England star as their move for Reims youngster Hugo Ekitike hangs in the balance.

However, West Ham have also registered an interest in taking Lingard back to the club where he spent a successful loan spell last season.

Lingard scored nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances for the Hammers during the second half of the campaign but has struggled to make an impact following his return to Old Trafford in the summer.

Lingard made just one start under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and has only matched that tally since Ralf Rangnick replaced the Norwegian in November.

It is understood the German boss has given the green light for Lingard to secure a temporary switch away from Old Trafford - and the move now lies in the hands of the club’s hierarchy as the transfer window approaches its conclusion.

Speaking recently about Lingard’s future, Rangnick commented: “With regard to Jesse, it’s the same as with quite a few other players.

“He’s a really good player, I see that in every training session. For me it’s normal that other clubs like, for example, Newcastle show interest in him.

“I’m not the one who is dealing with that. I know there might be some interest from other clubs but if you ask me now what will happen in the next 10 days until the closure of the window, I can’t answer that question I’m afraid.”
