Howe said after Chelsea: “We lost Jonjo and Joe Willock late last night to illness.

“That meant a complete tactical reshuffle this morning as we only had two central midfielders in the whole squad to pick from.”

Potential return date

All the being well, the pair should be back in contention for the trip to Goodison Park on Thursday night.

“We don’t think it’s serious,” Howe said, speaking last Wednesday before the win at Southampton.

“It’ll keep him out for a week to 10 days.”

Potential return date

On that timescale, the Argentine will return after the international break for the visit to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, April 3.

Kieran Trippier

The injury

The England full-back broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot during February’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa,

As a best-case outcome, Trippier could return for the final few games of the season.

Callum Wilson

The injury

The Magpies top goalscorer injured his calf during the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on December 27.

What Eddie Howe has said

“He’s been away for a considerable part of his rehab so, at the moment, he’s in London getting specialist treatment on his injury.

“Previous to that, he had been away in Dubai, again getting specialist treatment for his injury, so we haven’t seen a great amount of him around the training ground but I don’t think that’s been a negative for me.

“I know he’s away getting looked after and it also helped him mentally with the mental grind when you’re injured. I’ve been there many times when you’re coming into the same place to get the same treatment. It can have a negative effect on your psychology so when he does come back, we will see a bouncing Callum.

“He’s very happy, he knows he’s in a good place, he’s improving. What I would love to see is him come back and be like a new signing for us for our final few games.”

Potential return date

Similar to Trippier, Wilson could return for the final month of the campaign.
