Joelinton, Sven Botman & Kieran Trippier: Newcastle United injury list & return dates

Newcastle United could be without some key players for their final two games of the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Following Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea at St James’ Park, the Magpies face Arsenal and Everton knowing they require just one win to secure Champions League qualification.

They head to North London this weekend before hosting Everton on the final day of the campaign. Will Eddie Howe be welcoming any players back from injury, or will he have to go with what he’s got?

NewcastleWorld takes a look at Newcastle United’s injury list and when each player could return.

Kieran Trippier & Joe Willock

What’s the problem?

Trippier had started Newcastle’s last 10 matches in all competitions before missing the 2-0 win over Chelsea with a calf injury.

Willock started against Ipswich Town and Brighton & Hove Albion in place of Joelinton but a knee issue forced him to sit out the Chelsea match.

Howe said: “We don’t think they’re big injuries, but there’s such a short amount of time left now before the end of the season. We’d love to get them back fit, and able to play a part, but at this moment in time, I’ve not really got any idea whether or not that’s possible.”

Sven Botman

What’s the problem?

The Chelsea game marked Botman’s first start since February after recovering from his latest knee setback.

After the game, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted Botman had been feeling his knee at half-time but insisted his withdrawal in the 55th minute was more for tactical reasons.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: "He was slightly uncomfortable in the half time break with a knee problem. I don't think it's serious. He was obviously OK to carry on but he was feeling something so, tactically, I thought it would help us to change.

“He was icing a problem at half-time, so we hope he's okay. With that in mind and the fact I felt we needed to change tactically, we made a change, brought Lewy [Miley] on.”

Joelinton

What’s the problem?

Joelinton visited a specialist last month having been nursing a knee issue since February and has subsequently missed the last three matches.

The 28-year-old recently returned to Brazil for a short period before going to Barcelona for an injection. Howe hasn’t ruled out the midfielder returning before the end of the campaign but admits it is unlikely.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Speaking on Friday, Howe said: “I saw Joe yesterday for the first time in a while. He'd been away getting treatment and returned to Brazil briefly, but he's been back in Barcelona for another injection.

“I think he's feeling pretty good. Whether we see him before the end of the season, I'm not sure.”

A week earlier, Howe said: “With Joe, you'd never rule him out. I think he's so motivated to try and come back, but there was a bit of discomfort in his knee last week just before the game so he sought a specialist opinion.

“That opinion was nothing serious, but he needed a period of rest. He's now in Brazil so we'll wait and see if we can get him back before the end of the season. But the likelihood is probably not.”

Matt Targett

What’s the problem?

Targett was making only his second Premier League start of the season when he picked up a hamstring injury against former club Aston Villa last month.

Speaking after last month’s 3-0 win over Ipswich Town, Howe said: “We lost Matt Targett this week to a slight hamstring problem, again nothing serious but enough, maybe, to end his season.”

Lewis Hall

What’s the problem?

Hall underwent surgery on a foot problem in March and won’t return until next season.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

"I'm devastated for him actually because he had so much to look forward to at this moment of the season with the cup final - which will be a big thing for all the players at the moment,” Howe said at the time.

"Also the international experience coming up, and he was just in really good form as well and playing very well, so yeah, that's a big blow for him and for us. The most important thing now is his recovery and making sure he comes back as good as he can."
