Newcastle United were dealt two new injury concerns prior to the 4-2 defeat at Liverpool on New Year's Day.
Eddie Howe was without England international duo Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson after they picked up injuries during the Boxing Day loss at home to Nottingham Forest.
The pair join what is already a lengthy injury list on Tyneside ahead of Saturday afternoon's Tyne-Wear derby away to Sunderland in the third round of the FA Cup.
But Howe insists he is refusing to use the injury crisis as an excuse, despite exiting both the Carabao Cup and Champions League, and slipping to ninth in the Premier League table in recent weeks.
"You talk to any team in the Premier League and take half their team away, you're going to notice that over a long period of time and over a month where you're playing every three days, so I think we've been put in a tough spot.
"The big thing I look for is the effort and commitment of the players. Was there today? Yes. As long as we have that, we'll be fine."
As it stands, Newcastle are without Sandro Tonali, Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson, Javier Manquillo and Matt Targett.

1. Nick Pope - shoulder
Pope dislocated his shoulder in the Premier League win over Man Utd but is recovering ahead of schedule. Possible return date: Mid to late March 2024.
2. Sandro Tonali - banned
Tonali is suspended from football until August 2024 following an investigation into illegal betting activity. Possible return date: August 2024.
3. Joelinton - thigh
Joelinton underwent thigh surgery last month and won't return until May at the earliest. Possible return date: May 2024.
4. Matt Targett - hamstring
Targett underwent hamstring surgery early December. Could return to training in the next couple of weeks. Possible return date: Wolves (H) 02/03.
