Kieran Trippier believes Nick Pope and Sven Botman are two quality signings for Newcastle United.

Trippier was one of five signings the Magpies made in January - including Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Matt Targett - for a combined total of around £90million.

And United are on course to spend similar if not more this summer having already recruited Targett on a permanent basis from Aston Villa, plus Pope and Botman.

England international Pope has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at St James’ Park after completing a £12m move from Burnley.

Botman, meanwhile, is a player United have chased since January when Lille rejected three bids for the central defender.

Persistence and patience paid off however, as Newcastle were able to confirm the £35m arrival of Botman on a five-year deal last Friday, seeing off competition from Italian champions AC Milan to sign him.

Trippier, asked about their respective arrivals, believes the pair are great signings for the football club.

“It’s always good to add that extra quality,” Trippier told NUFC TV. “I know Popey very well from (England), he’s an excellent ‘keeper and Sven is a top-quality centre-half.

“The lads have been brilliant with them on the first day and it’s great to bring in that quality to help us push forward as a club.”

After avoiding Premier League relegation in quite remarkable fashion last season by winning 12 of their remaining 18 games, the focus of Eddie Howe’s side turns to competing higher up the table.

Trippier admits the club’s new signings will help them to achieve their aims.

“We finished the end of last season strongly but this is a new season now,” the 31-year-old added.

“We know our aims and where we want to be as a club and as players. Adding quality like Sven and Popey is always going to help us next season.

“We know it’s going to be difficult but we believe in ourselves as a team. We need to follow on from how we ended the season last year.

“It’s a new season and we know how challenging the Premier League is, especially with the quality that is arriving in this league now.

“But we’re bringing good additions into the team, we’ve got a good team anyway and a good manager, we just need to believe in ourselves and we know how far we can go.”
