Newcastle United are set to make a late call on Kieran Trippier ahead of Tuesday night's Premier League clash at home to Everton (kick-off 7:30pm).
The 33-year-old picked up a calf injury during the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on March 2 and was initially ruled out the next two matches away to Chelsea and Manchester City.
It also forced Trippier to miss England's friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. although it was hoped the two week international break would give the player enough time to recover for the visit of West Ham United.
However, the right-back wasn't named in the squad as United came from 3-1 down to win 4-3 at St James' Park.
Asked about Trippier's status ahead of facing the Toffees, Howe said: "Kieran is improving. A difficult injury for him. An injury to the calf, one we have to be very careful with and we'd hoped he'd be fit in and around this game but we'll have to wait and see how he goes during this week.
"He's desperate to be involved," Howe added. "He knows what's at stake for us towards the end of the season and his qualities are obvious. We're desperate to have him back but it has to be at the right time."
As it stands, Emil Krafth is in contention to start at right-back after Tino Livramento twisted his ankle against West Ham.
In the same match, Newcastle also lost Jamaal Lascelles to an ACL injury, which will sidelined him for six to nine months, while Miguel Almiron is a concern withdrawing with a knee injury just 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Not for the first time this campaign, the Magpies' absentee list currently stands at double figures. Here's a full list of the players ruled out against Everton and those that are doubtful:
1. Fabian Schar - hamstring
Schar felt tightness in his hamstring against Sheffield United, which forced him to withdraw at half-time. Possible return date: Burnley (A) 04/05.
2. Sven Botman - ACL
The Dutchman has been ruled out for six to nine months after undergoing surgery on his knee. Possible return date: December 2024.
3. Matt Targett - Achilles
Targett is sidelined for the rest of the season with an Achilles issue having only just returned from four months out. Possible return date: 2024-25 season.
4. Jamaal Lascelles - ACL
Lascelles sustained an ACL injury against West Ham and will be sidelined for six to nine months. Possible return date: December 2024.
