'Late call' - Newcastle United injury doubt v Sunderland as £20m star hopeful of Aston Villa return

Newcastle United injury news ahead of the FA Cup third round fixture away to Sunderland.

Newcastle United will make a late call on Kieran Trippier's fitness ahead of Saturday's derby against Sunderland (kick-off 12:45pm).

The England international missed the 4-2 defeat to Liverpool on New Year's Day because of a thigh injury. Trippier wasn't spotted in training on Thursday and remains a doubt for the short trip to the Stadium of Light.

Speaking to the media on Friday, United boss Eddie Howe said: "With Kieran we’re going to give him a late test today and see how he is for tomorrow.

Callum Wilson is ruled out of the next two matches against Sunderland and Manchester City with a calf injury. But Howe hopes to have the 31-year-old back for Aston Villa on January 30.

Asked about Wilson, Howe said: "It’s not too bad but it’s enough to keep him out of this game and our next game. But hopefully we'll have him back for Aston Villa."

Meanwhile, the likes of Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson remain sidelined. Here's Newcastle United's injury list in full and each player's potential return date:
