Eddie Howe’s side were frustrated by the Whites and Adams was one of the chief instigators after getting into an altercation with Bruno Guimaraes.

Although Adams and his teammates got a frosty reception from the home fans, the St James’ experience left a lasting impression on the 24-year-old.

“Favourite place…Newcastle was bumping this year,” the 24-year-old told the New York Red Bulls’ podcast.

“They’re doing things the right way and I think they have the recognition now of ‘jeez our team is good and Champions League is in our sights’.

“They came out and there was a full display. The fans were crazy, that was probably the loudest. It’s never-ending [the crowd], you look up and it’s just black. The fans keep going and you’re staring into an abyss.”

Adams’ performance in the middle of the park that night impressed Eddie Howe and he has subsequently been considered by Newcastle this summer.

But after signing Sandro Tonali from AC Milan for £52million, it’s unclear if United will move for another central midfielder.

Following Saturday’s pre-season opener at Gateshead, Howe admitted he was working under a strict budget due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.
