Leicester City owner sends classy message to Newcastle United - supporters will love it

Newcastle United beat Leicester City 3-0 but their owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha had some kind words to say before the game.

Leicester City owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha has taken the opportunity to congratulate Newcastle United on winning the Carabao Cup.

The 2-1 victory over Premier League champions elect Liverpool at Wembley on March 16 sparked wild scenes on Tyneside as the Magpies ended their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. Eddie Howe and his players were paraded around the city on an open-top bus before making an appearance on stage at the Town Moor. Around 300,000 people were estimated to have lined the streets and fields.

United’s cup success has threatened to be a distraction in their quest for Champions League qualification. However, that has not yet proved the case with Howe’s side making it two wins from two against Brentford and Leicester to move up to fifth in the Premier League table.

Newcastle edged past Brentford 2-1 at St James’ Park last Wednesday before winning 3-0 at Leicester on Monday night. A Jacob Murphy brace inside the opening 11 minutes and a goal from Harvey Barnes on his return to his former club helped record a comfortable victory.

But before the game, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha was keen to congratulate Newcastle on finally winning a trophy. The Thai businessman will know exactly how Geordie public are feeling having lifted the Premier League and FA Cup during the Srivaddhanaprabha family’s 15 years in charge.

In his programme notes, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha wrote: “Tonight’s visitors have had a very strong season so far and arrive here chasing UEFA Champions League football, having already secured the season’s first major trophy. Congratulations to Newcastle on their Carabao Cup success at Wembley last month.”

Unfortunately for Leicester, they aren’t currently in a position where they can compete for trophies. Barring a miracle, the Foxes will suffer their second relegation from the Premier League in three seasons. The defeat to Newcastle leaves them 19th in the table, 15 points from safety with seven matches remaining.

“The size of the task and the quality of opponents we need to overcome is clear but the short-term objectives do not said,” Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha added. “Whatever the circumstances and wherever it leads us, we must continue to work, fight and give everything to win. The work of our people and the support of our fans demand it. Until the last ball is kicked. Foxes never quit.”
