'Let's wait & see' - Newcastle United can trigger deal for 88-goal Premier League striker Eddie Howe loves

Eddie Howe was asked if Callum Wilson will be getting a new contract at Newcastle United.

Callum Wilson is facing an uncertain future at Newcastle United with only four games of the Premier League season remaining.

The 33-year-old is out of contract this summer and negotiations over a new deal are yet to commence. It is understood there is an option to trigger a one-year extension but the Magpies face a difficult decision with Wilson among the club’s top wage earners.

Various injury problems have restricted Wilson to just two Premier League starts in the last 12 months, whilst he has found the net just once this season in an FA Cup fourth round tie away to Birmingham City in February.

Wilson, to his credit, has remained fit and available since returning from his latest lay-off in February but he has struggled to force his way into the starting XI with Alexander Isak leading the line excellently with 26 goals this term.

That said, Eddie Howe has backed Wilson to play a huge part in the club’s Premier League run-in where they are looking to secure Champions League qualification. United currently sit third in the table ahead of remaining fixtures against Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton.

Eddie Howe asked if Callum Wilson will sign a new contract

And head coach Eddie Howe hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Wilson playing his way to a new contract after saying “let’s wait and see”.

“He's very much in my plans going forward. We have four games to go and he's a huge part of that,” said Howe.

“I think he's looked better and better in recent weeks. You have to understand Callum probably has been going through a pre-season sort of in the shop window, as in on the pitch, which is very difficult to do. But he needed the sort of the training and the game exposure to get back to his very best form. I think he's getting there now.

“I think physically, I see the Callum Wilson of old. So good signs for him. And he has stayed fit for a long period of time, which has been brilliant to see. And I think that on his long-term future, let's wait and see. Let's wait and see how he performs and how he continues to look.”

Wilson is third in Newcastle’s all-time Premier League goalscorer chart with 47 goals. At AFC Bournemouth, he netted 41 top-flight goals, leaving him just 12 short of 100.
