Liam Kennedy’s Newcastle United player ratings - including surprise man of the match

A Newcastle United win saw Eddie Howe’s Magpies finish the season in 11th place.

A Callum Wilson double saw Newcastle United claim all three points at Burnley and not only enhance their own Premier League stock, but also put an end to the Clarets’ stay in the top flight.

In a day of Premier League drama, Burnley’s loss, coupled with a win for Leeds United ensured Championship football beckons at Turf Moor, while the Magpies’ faithful are looking up, rather than down. Maxwell Cornet netted a consolation for the hosts.

“It was a good finish to the game, credit to my players for how they attacked the match and dealt with all of the things surrounding the game,” Howe said after the 2-1 win.

“I am not sure I could have said I saw it coming, as we had a tough time ahead of us (in December).

“This position here seemed a long way off. I have to compliment the players for how they’ve dug in, how they’ve united together. Again, great result, right through the team, giving their all for the shirts.”
