Liam Kennedy’s Newcastle United XI at Burnley - with two major defensive calls
And here we are, the final day of the Premier League season.
Everyone expected it to be a relegation six-pointer at Turf Moor - and it is, if only for one of the teams.
Newcastle United and Eddie Howe have unexpectedly streaked away from trouble in the second half of the season, having failed to win any of their first 14 games. A top half finish, albeit a long shot, isn’t even off the table this afternoon.
For the Clarets, the potential outcome of this one is so much greater with their top-flight status at risk.
Mike Jackson’s side, 17th in the table, must match Leeds United’s result at Brentford to confirm survival in front of their home fans.
“We’ll pick our strongest team, and try and win the game,” United’s head coach vowed. There’s no let up from our perspective. We’re determined to end the season on a high.
“Tactically, we’ll try and get it right. Burnley’s a totally different challenge.”
Here’s Liam Kennedy’s predicted Newcastle United starting XI to face Burnley:
Newcastle United and Eddie Howe have unexpectedly streaked away from trouble in the second half of the season, having failed to win any of their first 14 games. A top half finish, albeit a long shot, isn’t even off the table this afternoon.

5. LB: Matt Targett
Targett is on loan at Newcastle United from Aston Villa - and could this be his last appearance in black and white? He’s been very good since January, but whether a permanent deal will be struck remains up in the air.

6. CM: Bruno Guimaraes
This boy is so talented, it feels like you could play him in goal and he’d still be the best player on the park. Playing a little deeper at the moment, but still chipping in with goals and creating chances galore. Photo: Owen Humphreys

7. CM: Sean Longstaff
Another who could be playing his last game for the club, with his current deal, which remarkably undervalues the player, running out next month. Arguably had his best game for United v Arsenal. last time out. Photo: Stephen Pond

8. CM: Joelinton
NUFC’s player of the season... I bet that’s not something you’d imagine you’d be reading now, is it? But here we are, and he deserves every plaudit that comes his way. A destroyer. Photo: Stu Forster
