"I always see light at the end of the tunnel," said Howe, when speaking to Sky Sports post-match.

"The first thing we look for is commitment, and I think the players made represented the badge and the city. The effort and commitment has been there. I back the quality of the group. We back the players to get results."

While Liverpool dominated the encounter from minute one, some key decisions had a big say on the final result. A number of close VAR calls went against the Magpies, according to Howe, who admits he feels hard done to by two, inparticular.

The first was the decision not to give a penalty for a foul on Sean Longstaff, which eventually led to Liverpool's second goal. The second incident was the penalty given against Martin Dubravka for Mo Salah's strike from the spot, in which Diogo Jota appeared to take a dive.

"A lot happened (in the game). I am disappointed with the defeat but also the last two goals.

"I didn't think the last one was a penalty (Jota), and the Longstaff one was before that.

"For me that shouldn't be given (Jota). Martin pulls his hand away. Sean's was (a penalty), just before that incident.

"We feel hard done by.

"You have to have the mindset that you create your own luck. We feel hard done by, but feeling sorry for yourself never brings about a positive result. We will look at ourselves but the players gave everything, physically committed to the game but Liverpool played well."
