Liverpool are backing themselves to sign Khephren Thuram, who has been linked with Newcastle United.

Liverpool reportedly expect to sign Newcastle United transfer target Khephren Thuram from Nice this summer.

The defensive-minded midfielder features on the Magpies’ transfer shortlist following an impressive season in Ligue 1, where he scored two goals and registered eight assists in 48 appearances.

He did, however, recover in time to represent France at the under-21s European Championships - where he’s just played against Newcastle’s soon-to-be latest signing.

Thuram’s France faced Sandro Tonali’s Italy in Romania on Friday evening, with the former running out as 2-1 winners in their Group D opener.

With United’s main focus being on finalising a £60million deal for Tonali, interest in Thuram has cooled, and now Liverpool expect to win the race for the 22-year-old, according to Football Insider.

Indeed, it was also claimed by Football Transfers earlier this month that Thuram has told Nice he wants to move to Anfield and has already verbally agreed personal terms. The player currently has two years remaining on his current contract.

After releasing three midfielders in Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has prioritised strengthening that area and has already signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion for £35million.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe is hopeful he can sign another midfielder once Tonali’s arrival is confirmed.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has been a long-term target, while NewcastleWorld reported last week further talks with RB Leipzig over Dominik Szoboszlai have taken place.
