Look away now! Newcastle United goalkeeper Mark Gillespie in Papa Johns Trophy howler

Having not played for Newcastle United for more than a year, Mark Gillespie’s return to action for the club’s under-21 side in the Papa Johns Trophy was not one to remember.

Newcastle United keeper Mark Gillespie has been as patient as they come for another opportunity to play.

Barely used since arriving on a free transfer from Motherwell in the summer of 2020, the Geordie’s performances have been limited to the Carabao Cup last season.

However, with his route to the first team busied up by Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman this season, and with Marin Dubravka still to come back he looks even less likely than ever to get minutes.

Gillespie has this campaign been recalled for the club’s under-21 side in their Papa Johns Trophy campaign, more commonly known as the Pizza Cup, and played in the young Magpies’ 2-0 loss at Harrogate Town last night.

And Gillespie won’t want to watch this one back, because after just six minutes he makes a costly error. See below.

Gillespie’s last appearance for United was in the penalty shootout victory over Newport County in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, on September 30, 2021.
