Newcastle United announced Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Amanda Staveley had left the club earlier this month

Mehrdad Ghodoussi has endeared himself to Newcastle United supporters - by becoming one himself.

Earlier this month, the Iranian-born businessman and his wife, Amanda Staveley, announced their exit from St James’ Park. The duo helped facilitate the £300million deal that saw Mike Ashley end his 14-year reign on Tyneside.

PCP Capital Partners, the married couple’s private equity firm, owned a 10 per cent stake following the acquisition - later diluted to six per cent. Ghodoussi and Staveley left completely on July 12, with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the Reuben brothers increasing their stakes.

Toon fans flooded the pair with well-wishes given their role in Newcastle’s recent rise. Ghodoussi and Staveley were the public face of the takeover and played a hands-on role before boardroom appointments were made.

Writing on social media, Ghodoussi thanked the fan base for a “truly unforgettable” experience. He posted: "I just want to say a huge thank you to the fans and the city for embracing Amanda and me with such open arms. Your passion and support have made this journey truly unforgettable.

“You have played such an important role in our lives these last few years, and nothing will take those memories away. Newcastle will always have a special place in our hearts, and we will cherish our time there forever. I'd like to thank Eddie Howe, the coaching staff, the players, and of course our chairman, Yasir, and the PIF team, Jamie, and the rest of the Reuben family for being such great partners.

"Finally, I've seen all your messages, and I'm so grateful to each and every one of you. I'll always be a supporter and a proud member of the Toon Army. I will love and remember you all forever, and I know the club will keep achieving great things with your amazing support."

The 51-year-old has now taken an extra step by changing his social media bio. On X, formerly Twitter, Ghodoussi’s profile reads: “NUFC fan, Partner at PCP Capital Partners.”

This tweak has not gone unnoticed, with one fan writing “love you wor kid” to the former owner. Newcastle are now controlled 85 per cent by PIF, with the Reubens owning the remaining shares.
