Newcastle United club-record signing Alexander Isak has resumed full training after over three months on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old has made just three appearances for the Magpies following his £60million summer move from Real Sociedad due to a thigh injury.

Isak first picked up the issue on international duty with Sweden in September. He was nearing a comeback a month later but suffered a re-injury.

The former Borussia Dortmund man was tipped to step up his recovery during the World Cup break with a view to featuring in friendlies against Al-Hilal and Rayo Vallecano.

But when head coach Eddie Howe sat down with the media during the club’s trip to Saudi Arabia, Isak’s return was pushed back.

Isak remained absent for games against Bournemouth, Leicester City and Leeds United, and isn’t available for United’s visit to Premier League leaders Arsenal tonight.

However, according to the Daily Telegraph, there’s a chance Isak could play a part in Saturday’s FA Cup third round clash at Sheffield Wednesday.

The striker scored on his debut against Liverpool and had another ruled out for offside as Newcastle succumbed to a 2-1 defeat after Fabio Carvalho’s 98th-minute winner.

He started back-to-back draws with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth at St James’ Park but has not been seen since.

Howe said recently the return of Isak will ‘feel like a new signing’ for Newcastle United.

“Whenever he is fit and available, he will certainly come into my thinking,” Howe said.

“A bit of a cliche but he would be like a new signing because we haven’t had him for a long period of time.

“I’ve had conversations with him to find out how he is feeling and to try and help him. Naturally, he’s been disappointed as he’s desperate to play and prove how good he is.

“It’s more a case of keeping him calm and trying to make sure he realises he’s got a long future ahead of him.”
