Newcastle United are now prepared to sell Alexander Isak to Arsenal this summer, according to reports. Transfer talk in recent times has centred around players potentially leaving St James’ Park at the end of the season. Fans have been given a throwback to the dark times as reports continually link Newcastle players with moves away.

In January, CEO Darren Eales admitted that the Magpies may need to offload talent to free up “headroom” for FFP/PSR constraints. Newcastle needed to bolster their squad at the turn of the year but were unable to due to financial restrictions.

That is despite boasting the richest owners in world football, with Toon fans frustrated at the current regulations. FFP/PSR has become a hot topic in recent months throughout English football as a result of several breaches and a lean January outlay.

Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City have all faced charges for their balance sheet within the last few months and Premier League clubs spent £700million less in the winter window than the previous year. Even Newcastle, whose owners are worth a reported £700billion, may find themselves needing to offload stars to fund potential incomings. Football Insider are reporting that Isak could be one of those to leave to fuel a summer splurge.

Signed 18 months ago for £63million, the Swede hit the ground running to become a hit with Toon supporters. Injury woes have slightly negated his impact but, when fit, Isak is undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s best strikers.

A monstrous offer would be needed given his transfer fee, age, importance to Newcastle and time left on his contract. Arsenal are rumoured to be keeping tabs on the 24-year-old as Mikel Arteta eyes a new striker.

Losing Isak would also leave bigger questions for the Saudi-backed project as a whole. Selling a star asset three years into the plan to transform Newcastle into a global powerhouse does not bode well for those planning on making the switch to Tyneside.
