Manchester United are sweating over the fitness of two key players that could be doubts for next month's visit to Newcastle United.

The 13-time Premier League champions are set to travel to St James Park on the first Saturday of December as they look to avenge the Carabao Cup defeat inflicted on them by Eddie Howe's side earlier this month.

Both sides are in the race for the European places and will see the Tyneside clash as key in their battle to replicate last season's top four finishes - and despite Newcastle heading into a hectic period with several key injuries, their visitors now have concerns over the availability of two members of their squad.

Experienced midfielder Cristian Eriksen and summer signing Rasmus Hojlund have both withdrawn from the Denmark squad that will face Slovenia and Northern Ireland in Euro 2024 qualifiers over the next week after suffering injuries in the Red Devils' 1-0 win over Premier League rivals Luton Town on Saturday.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan midfielder Eriksen was forced out of the action with a knee injury during the first-half at Old Trafford and is now expected to be out of action for up to a month. Striker Hojlund, who joined the Red Devils from Serie A club Atalanta in the summer, suffered a muscle strain and is a doubt for his side's Champions League trip to Galatasaray and the game at St James Park.

A club statement said: "Christian has a knee injury that is set to keep him out for around a month, while Rasmus suffered a muscle strain. It is hoped he will return before the end of November."

Erik ten Hag is already without the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Amad Diallo for the visit to Newcastle - but will hope Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will return in time to feature against the Magpies.
