Manchester City will be without one of their key players for the upcoming Carabao Cup tie versus Newcastle United.

Manchester City will be without key midfielder Rodri for Wednesday night’s third round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United.

The 27-year-old, whose goal won Man City the Champions League in June, was shown a red card for violent conduct in this afternoon’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

Rodri raised his hands and pushed Morgan Gibbs-White following an altercation by the corner flag. As a result, the Spaniard will miss the next three domestic games against Newcastle, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal.

“Hopefully, Rodri will learn,” said the City boss Rodri, who revealed the player had apologised for his actions. “Rodri has to control himself and his emotion. That is what he has to do.

“I can get a yellow card, Rodri cannot get a yellow card because they are inside the pitch.

“I said at half-time, ‘Be careful, guys. Be careful.’ Unfortunately, we could not do it. Rodri could not do it.”

Goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland inside the opening quarter of an hour maintained City’s perfect start to the Premier League season.

Newcastle face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday (kick-off 4:30pm) hoping to make it back-to-back league wins.
