Injuries, injuries, injuries. Nobody could fault Newcastle United supporters for banning that word from their vocabulary before the end of the season.

The Benton treatment table has been bursting with multi-million-pound talent while Eddie Howe’s side have struggled on, patching up players and even sending them into battle half-fit if needed. European and domestic campaigns were unable to deliver their maximum results, a sour taste in Newcastle’s mouths when they reflect upon the season come May.

You get the picture: the Magpies have taken a battering as far as setbacks are concerned. Even on Monday, Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon hobbled off against Chelsea not long after Harvey Barnes was ruled out before kick-off.

Their mission does not get any easier as they prepare for a mammoth FA Cup clash with Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side are the flag bearers for where Newcastle are striving to get to, enjoying an era of dominance in world football.

City are aiming for an unprecedented feat - the first time to win back-to-back trebles. Newcastle stand in their way as far as the FA Cup is concerned when they travel to the Etihad this weekend.

But what about City’s injury list? Boasting the world’s best squad, a few knocks in the camp here and there does not halt the influx of wins they continue to rack up. Newcastle can, however, take solace from two Man City players almost certainly being ruled out on Saturday.

Ederson - Hamstring

Ederson has been the undisputed first choice for Guardiola since arriving from Benfica in 2017. An injury picked up while fouling Darwin Nunez for Liverpool’s penalty last week is expected to see him ruled out for four weeks.

Potential return date: March 31 (vs Arsenal)

Jack Grealish - Groin

The £100million man has endured a frustrating campaign this time around. Grealish was a star performer in the treble-winning season but injuries - and Jeremy Doku’s arrival - have frustrated his progress. Guardiola confirmed in a recent press conference that the 28-year-old will not return until after the international break. Potential return date: March 31 (vs Arsenal)
